I mostly stayed in camp except for progresses and a long trek up to the front on Sunday, just to make sure that we saw all of the faire. The only bad thing about our spot at the back of the faire is that we didn't have a lot of visitors. So, how was everyone elses weekend? Anything exciting happen? Any fun new gigs?

Re: How was everyones first weekend?
Tue, April 11, 2006 - 3:34 PMMy first weekend was really good (I think) ... I was REALLY tired & sore on Sunday morning ... not QUITE as bad on Monday morning. It's tough to be as far back in the Faire as we are ... unless people are coming by to see the joust - they don't really have any other incentive to come all the way back to our neck of the woods.
We're TRYING to walk people down the "Ale-Avenue" so that everyone gets a chance to at least walk by all the encampments - but to actually get the people to stop & talk to any of us is a bit of a chore.
I think the most interesting "new" gig we came up with this weekend was our gang-buster "recruitment"-bit ... where one of our guys stumbled upon a burlap sack in the road. Next thing ya know - we're tossing on top of people's heads and "clubbing" them -- putting cassocks on 'em & ... bingo-bango-bongo ... they're now a part of the English Company of Foote!!
(Okay - we're trying to be REALLY careful who we pick to do this bit with 'cuz they have to be willing to play along with us in this thing 'cuz it *is* a bit physical and they have to at least be SORTA willing to play our "victim")
========
... this is even more fun than the "grenadier" gig we were doing last year. Where we just picked up a big ol' rock (not many of THOSE around, eh?) and practiced tossing 'em back & forth to one another... then if someone happened to drop it ... we'd run in a panic and dive flat onto the ground in order to "take cover" for when the rock might explode. (We *HAD* to use rocks... the captain wanted us to practice a lot before he'd pay for the extra powder!)
(People just looked at us like we were freaks when we'd just run screaming & dive flat onto the ground behind 'em! ... then we'd look up... declare the "grenade" a dud -- pick it up & continue on our merry way!
=========
We'll probably continue with these bits as the season progresses ... slowly evolve 'em or change them or come up with something totally spontaneous or new next weekend.
If we're feeling especially energenic - there's always the "Messenger of Death" -

Tue, April 11, 2006 - 4:13 PM... (*smiles*) ... okay - fine ... no "Messenger of Death" -- (personally, I've never found it to be THAT fun a gig) ... how would Andy feel about having a burlap sack on his head for a minute & being "beaten" about by a group of fellas & stuffed into a red cassock for a bit?? -

Tue, April 11, 2006 - 6:59 PMOh c'mon ... think of how much trouble we could get our officers into (which of course, means getting our whole company in trouble) if they were to "accidently" recruit the German Ambassador??
*laughing* ... c'mon - it could INCREDIBLY funny! -

Re: How was everyones first weekend?
Tue, April 11, 2006 - 9:56 PMI am completely amused by the direction that this thread took. It's just nice for this tribe to have this much activity. :)
Us Irish had a very similar gig of recruiting by our men standing in a circle around the victim who wandered into our camp all with big sticks in their hands. We were also trying to lure Germans into our camp by shaking gold chains their direction. That was a lot of fun! We also stole Lynn from Border Horse, her character is Irish and the Border Horse stole her when they were in Ireland, so we were stealing her back. Those were my favorite gigs of the weekend.
Now we just need to really work on recruiting for real and getting our numbers back up. So, if you know any men who would like to play in an Irish Military group in Southern CA, send 'em our way. -

Re: How was everyones first weekend?
Wed, April 12, 2006 - 8:32 AMIt's been a tough recruiting year for all of us, I think...
I know the German numbers are up a bit from last year because they've got a lot of "old veterans" returning on a regular basis now.
The Mariners are REALLY low in their number of men.
I think the English got a total of ONE new man joining our ranks -- but we've gotten really lucky for the prior two years and managed to pull in about a good half-dozen good recruits. Sometimes all it takes is ONE new person joining which sets off a chain-reaction as s/he gets their friends to come join them... and then they get some friends to join them... etc., etc., etc.
Company of Shotte is a small group - but they've always been a small group. (Something 'bout getting members to shell out for costuming AND drop a solid grand for their primary accessory tends to keep most of the "newbies" away)
Border Horse has their solid core members - I don't see many new faces over at their camp this season.
The Academy has done well for itself - but that's mostly due to older veterans shifting over to that group more than getting new apprentices to join. (Has anyone seen ANY of the "Barber Surgeons" this year??)
Would y'all be interested in coming up with a solid "committee" or something for St. Michaels to recruit new members into our Guild? Let those apprentices decide which group fits best with them ... but get them "in" the guildyard!
